Erica Spiegelman is an addiction and wellness specialist, motivational speak, and author of Rewired: A Bold New Approach to Addiction and Recovery. Erica is helping to change lives by working with individuals on personal growth, by treating the Mind, Body and Spirit. Erica is also a recovering alcoholic and shares with us her grim story of isolation and spiritual bankruptcy as drinking took over her life.
Erica’s parents divorced when she was seven years old. She loved her mother and didn’t want to disappoint anyone by being sad so she put on a brave face and acted like everything was okay. Erica says her defragmentation began there. There were also problem drinkers in her family, giving Erica a predisposition to alcoholism so that by the time she reached college, she fell right into the hard partying lifestyle at the University of Arizona. It was clear to her she liked drinking more than other people, and when she moved to New York City her addiction grew progressively worse. She stayed out to 5 am 7 days a week, woke up in stranger’s houses, and started to notice frightening physical symptoms like violent shaking and anxiety.
Erica's mother urged her to get treatment through the years, but Erica wanted to try everything except get professional help. Then one morning she woke up after a night of drinking and purposely swallows a glass of wine that had been left out all night next to her bed. It was then that she realized how spiritually dead she felt, how utterly hopeless, and she asked god out loud to help her. She didn’t get help right then, but that plea to her higher power set the events in motion to deliver her to her destiny. She points out that you don't have to have a DUI or an accident to hit your rock bottom. It can come subtly and quietly from inside.
Erica burned out in NYC and moved back to California, entering a toxic relationship that exacerbated her drinking and ultimately led her to her bottom. She tried several times to sober up, but it didn’t take. Finally, she went into treatment and says that getting out of her environment was the key to her recovery and has been sober ever since.
During her first week of treatment, an incredible moment changed her life forever. A volunteer at the treatment center approached and told her, “you will help people.” She confirmed that yes, she would. Now Erica Spiegelman continues on her mission to help people every day as an addictions counselor. She also hosts Rewired Radio and is the founder of ericaspiegelman.com, a multi-media health platform and blog.
She asks those suffering from addiction:
Are you ready to stop betraying yourself?
Could you possibly live a better life?
Are you ready to create your own path?
