Matt Mayberry, a former NFL linebacker for the Chicago Bears, is currently one of the most read columnists for Entrepreneur Magazine, as well as an acclaimed keynote speaker and peak performance strategist. He has just released his book, Winning Plays: Tackling Adversity and Achieving Success in Business and in Life, which reveals how he treated failure as a way to start over.
It's difficult to believe that as a teenager Matt Mayberry was a full-blown drug addict and criminal. Matt surrounded himself with the "wrong crowd" in high school, drinking, snorting cocaine, and consuming whatever drugs he could get his hands on. This didn't keep him from being a great athlete, and baseball scouts were after him, but he blew his chances when he stole a teammate's wallet for drug money.
Eventually, the principal was going to expel Matt and gave him an ultimatum to get treatment or leave school. Matt didn't have any desire to stop his self destructive habits, but agreed to go into treatment only because his grandfather gave him $500. Matt was miserable in his newfound sobriety, but he describes the critical moment that changed his life forever.
After recovering from his addiction, Matt Mayberry invested all his focus on a new goal: to repay his family for all the hell he put them through. He pursued football with fierce determination and succeeded in becoming an NFL player for his home team, the Chicago Bears.
However, this was not happily ever after. His dream came to a crashing halt, a disappointment that would put any former addict to the ultimate test.
